About Us

OXYGYM was created in 1999 by Mr. Richard Markx, a Registered Respiratory Therapist since 1979.  Mr. Markx’s extensive experience in treating patients with pulmonary disease inspired him to establish the premier outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation facilities in the New York metropolitan area.  OXYGYM’s talented multi-disciplinary staff and modern facilities offer patients with pulmonary disease a unique opportunity to make significant improvement in their strength, endurance, exercise tolerance, shortness of breath, and in the performance of their daily activities.  OXYGYM has developed into a wonderful community where friendly, compassionate health care professionals and patients from all walks of life and all ages form long lasting friendships.

The American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society recently adopted the following definition of pulmonary rehabilitation:

Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an evidenced-based, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive intervention for patients with chronic respiratory diseases who are symptomatic and often have decreased daily activities.  Integrated into the individualized treatment for the patient, pulmonary rehabilitation is designed to reduce symptoms, optimize functional status, increase participation, and reduce health care costs through stabilizing or reversing systemic manifestations of the disease.
